I just returned from a fantastic week of ice climbing in Ouray. Some people would argue that Ouray is a mecca for the ice experience. This week Iain and I headed south from Bend to explore Acker Rock. For years both of us had heard of this spot, and we finally arranged a day to go. Acker is placed squarely between Highway 138 and 62, west of Crater Lake National Park. Geologically speaking it is composed of Quartz Latite, but for climbers like us, it just meant that it climbed like well featured granite.

This sort of thing doesn't happen to me much of the time but it did on Monday. The White River Glacier is one of the most accessible glaciers in the Lower 48. For skiing, the access is phenomenal and for a 4600 foot climb up from Timberline Lodge, it is possible to get a 6700 foot descent all the way to White River Snowpark.

This area is known for granite climbing fairly close to the road. Due to its east side location, the area frequently gets better weather than the west side of the range. We had a great day out in the park with cool, autumn temperatures and excellent climbing conditions. We are finally skiing around Mt Bachelor this week. Although the mountain isn't open yet, there is some nice skiing on the hill that is giving us a chance to dust off the skis and enjoy some dry light powder. This is a little know area, but is very consistent with ice forming conditions all winter. We were very happy to find some fat ice conditions, and plenty of good approaching to do, just to make sure we are in decent shape.
